Abstract : Information systems IS pedagogy research supports the use of collaborative learning strategies that are based on the belief that learning increases when students work together to solve problems and develop cooperative learning skills. In this paper, we present an empirical comparison of two classroom design approaches – a ‘speed dating’ method and a traditional presentation format. We collected and analysed data from student questionnaire-based surveys and in-class researcher observations of student engagement in an undergraduate senior capstone course entitled, ‘Innovation in Information Systems’. Our results show increases in student engagement reported and observed and improvements in student-driven feedback given and received during the speed dating sessions as compared to the presentation sessions. We believe these findings demonstrate that the speed dating method is an effective alternative to a presentation format and is a useful complement to other collaborative learning methodologies. Obviously this will require 9 sessions to allow the participants to visit each station. The problem arises from the fact that I would also like to use this as a networking opportunity. It would be great if someone knew of a method or algorithm to allocate participants to groups so that they only meet other participants once. Two encounters would be acceptable but I don’t really want any more than that.

Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process which has the purpose of encouraging eligible singles to meet large numbers of new potential partners in a very short period of time. SpeedDating , as a single word, is a registered trademark of Aish HaTorah. Speed dating , as two separate words, is often used as a generic term for similar events. The earliest documented example of speed dating was by Aryeh Alan and Rena Hirsch of Los Angeles in early who developed speed dating as a solution to the problem of typical single events where “only attractive women and outgoing men have success at the end of the evening”.
Usually advance registration is required for speed dating events. Men and women are rotated to meet each other over a series of short “dates” usually lasting from three to eight minutes depending on the organization running the event.

At the start of a speed dating session, students are given a topic or question to discuss. Each student sits facing another student. Students typically remain in their partner-groups for about minutes before the instructor, who must keep time, notifies them to move on to their next partner. Once students rotate to their new partners, the timer is reset and students again discuss their topic or question, this time with a new discussion partner.
The session proceeds in this manner, with each student thus getting the opportunity to interact with multiple other students in a series of brief one-on-one discussions Murphy, Depending on the goals of the session, the instructor may prepare just a few broad questions for students to discuss Murphy, Rather than preparing the answer sheets themselves, instructors can assign their preparation as a homework or in-class activity, as creating the answer sheets serves as another opportunity for students to learn the material Danczak, Another pre-session preparatory activity is to provide students with time to write on the topic to organize their ideas before they begin to converse with their peers Murphy, In other variations, students may be required to take a stand on a topic, or they may be asked to incorporate points made by other students into their position as the session goes along Murphy,

I was planning on following up with a discussion of the phenomena that I used to refine the model by taking into account differences between individuals. But since comments focused on methodology rather than the empirical phenomena, I decided to write about methodology first, so that readers wouldn’t have to disbelief while reading my next post.
This post is more dense and technical than my last one. If you don’t fall into either category but are interest in the series, you can skip it without loss of continuity. This paper explores an innovative approach to evaluating the effectiveness of a writing group in an Australian research-intensive university. Traditional qualitative and quantitative methods typically applied in higher-education research may be effective in analysing the output of writing groups; however, they do not always address the affective domain of writing and giving and receiving feedback in a small-group context.
The group had previously evaluated its practice with a speed-dating activity, itself an innovative approach designed for efficiency and to take advantage of the size and diversity of the group. The changing membership of the group, from eight to four participants, warranted a methodology appropriate to the intimacy of the group. In this paper, three theoretical frameworks are used to conceptualise the practice of the smaller group: communities of practice, peer mentoring and affect theory.
The methodologies of critically reflective practice and memory work described here emerged from these theoretical frameworks.
